Sometimes, the hardest part of starting therapy is figuring out what to say.
Maybe something from your past still affects you, but you just don’t have the words to express it. Or maybe you do have the words, but can’t get them out because your emotions are too strong.
Sand tray therapy offers another way to explore those feelings. Using sand and miniature objects, you can create scenes that express experiences, relationships, and emotions that are difficult to put into words.
Sand tray therapy may help some adults who have experienced trauma, particularly when verbal expression feels challenging. The therapists at Healing Pathways of Houston would be happy to incorporate it into a treatment plan that respects your needs, comfort, and pace.
How Can Sand Tray Therapy Support Adults Who’ve Experienced Trauma?
If you struggle to discuss painful experiences, you’re not alone. Many adults who have experienced trauma may worry about being judged or misunderstood. Or they simply don’t have the words to capture the experience.
Sand tray therapy gives you an additional way to communicate. Instead of discussing your trauma in detail, you can simply start by choosing an object or arranging a scene. With your therapist’s support, that will open a conversation and help you explore feelings and patterns at a manageable pace.
While sand tray therapy can provide opportunities to talk about what happened, your therapist will never pressure you to talk about something you don’t feel ready to talk about. And, if it’s hard to remember some of your traumatic experiences, you can work on the feelings of distrust, disconnection, or sense of safety instead.
Using fewer words doesn’t necessarily make the work emotionally easy. Creating a scene in the sand tray can bring up strong feelings. If that happens, your therapist will check in with you, adjust the pace, or help you emotionally regulate before continuing. You’re also welcome to ask questions, decline a suggestion, and speak freely with your therapist in session.
Early research on sand tray therapy for adult trauma is still developing, but so far, the results are encouraging. For example, one small study published in the Journal of Creativity in Mental Health examined sand tray therapy and reported reduced trauma symptoms in the majority of participants.
Is Sand Tray Therapy Only for Children?
No, sand tray therapy helps children, teens, and adults alike. For adults, the process can offer a different perspective on familiar struggles.
A scene might help you explore feelings of isolation, a need for protection, navigating conflict, or searching for connection. The meaning comes from your experience, rather than a fixed interpretation of each object.
What Happens During a Sand Tray Therapy Session?
Trying something unfamiliar in therapy can feel a little awkward, so let’s talk about what you could expect in a sand tray therapy session:
Your therapist will give you a shallow tray of sand and some miniature objects, like people, animals, buildings, or trees.
You’ll start to create your scene. You don’t need to arrive with a story in mind or know what you want to create. You can explore whatever you feel comfortable with in the moment. It might be how you feel in the moment, something you’re struggling with, or something you wish were different. You’ll never be asked to recreate a traumatic event.
When you feel ready, your therapist might invite you to describe your scene. They might ask some follow-up questions to understand what the scene means to you. You might explore what feelings came up while creating your scene or what an aspect of the scene means to you. Again, you don’t have to explain everything if you don’t want to.
Before ending, your therapist can help you reflect on what you noticed and check how you’re feeling. You may discuss how the experience connects to your counseling goals or what you’d like to explore next time. Sometimes you may experience a breakthrough, or you might find a starting point for next session.
